Cleaning Tips for Students
It is now even more important to keep your property clean to help stop the spread of Covid-19. You can help do this by wiping down all door handles, light switches, work surfaces and taps on a regular basis. Even keep some hand sanitiser in the hallway for guests.
Create a job rota, this will save arguments if everyone chips in and does their bit. Make sure you keep your personal belongings in your rooms and then it will be easier to tidy up.
You do have a second option of all contributing towards a cleaner. Even if this is only for the communal areas it would make for a more pleasant living experience for the duration of your tenancy.
Stain removal – keep in a stock of stain removal products for carpets and sofas then you can deal with the problem straight away.
Areas to keep on top of or you may incur charges from the Landlord at the checkout stage.
Kitchen
Oven and hob – Make sure you keep clean at all times or the oven will start smoking. You can get some amazing oven cleaner that will bring it all up as new.
Fridge – make sure this is cleaned on a regular basis and all mouldy food is cleared out straight away. Make sure you wipe down the door seals or the doors do not shut properly.
Freezer – Make sure that the freezer isn’t overfilled or the door isn’t left ajar or you will get an ice build-up which means you have to defrost the freezer.
Dishwashers – use salt and keep clear of all food waste making sure you scrape all food off plates before putting in the dishwasher.
Keep all worktops and floor areas clean and wiped down free from food waste as this will attract vermin.
Lounge
Spills on carpets, usually coffee or red wine. Make sure this is dealt with straight away and use a stain remover and follow the directions. Keep some universal stain remover in stock for emergencies.
Do NOT use blu tack as it leaves greasy marks on the walls and you will be charged for this at the end of the tenancy.
Bathroom
Shower and bath outlets – keep clear of hair and shower gel and use drain un-blocker on a regular basis, leave this overnight and it should make it all free flowing again.
Toilets – keep toilet bleach in at all times and clean the toilet, seat, under the seat and the floor surrounding the toilet every day if you have a lot of people using that bathroom.
Make sure there is plenty of ventilation at all times or mould will appear on the walls and ceiling. Keep the window open when showering and the extractor fan on and this will reduce moisture in the air and stop mould forming on bathroom walls, ceilings and on the grout
External areas
External drains from the sink – make sure that no food waste or cooking fat is put down the sink waste as over time this will block up and potentially cause a blockage.
At the end of the tenancy you will be required to leave the property in the same condition as when you moved in. It will be down to you as a group to arrange a professional clean, should you decide to go down this route, but Star Lettings will send you a list of our preferred cleaning companies near to the end of the tenancy. It is best to book this in plenty of time as the cleaners get booked up very quickly.
